As I look back at the seven weeks of my first field experience as a teacher, I realize just how much it has shaped me and changed my perspectives. I not only got to learn about tools to help with teaching but also all the work that goes into teaching and about what makes a diverse and inclusive school and classroom Through my experience I got to help students with projects, be in charge of a few students at a time, read the class stories, and engage in the students learning. One of the things I wrote as my “I Believe” statement was “students learn in a different way and pace” and this showed to be as true as can be in my Pre-K classroom. None of the students were at the same learning level since some students understood things better than others, everyone had their strengths and weaknesses. This was something that was important to recognize and be able to help those students that needed it.

During my time at the school I was able to see how the school encourages diversity and inclusiveness throughout the classroom and school. The school is fairly diverse within the students, they have French and English students and multiple different origins and backgrounds that help to show how diverse and also how inclusive they are by making everyone feel welcomed. I was very happy to see that the teachers took extra time to help the students that needed more help and or that didn’t understand what was being asked and needed it explained in a different way. I also think being able to teach something in more then one way is very important for your students to all be able to succeed.

I guess you could say I was lucky enough to be with a younger class because they are the ones that need the most attention and help. There was never a time where we weren’t doing something in the classroom with the students, whether it be playing games or doing activities with them, helping them put on/off their coats, giving them their snack, listening to their daily picture drawing, or reading them a story. I am happy I got the opportunity to be in a classroom that allowed me to be so active and hands on with the students and really get to know each of them.
